The north-west bank of the Rothsee-Hauptsperre is a nature reserve on the Rothsee (Hauptsperre) in the Central Franconian district of Roth .

location

The nature reserve is located on the northwestern part of the Rothsee main dam, about 2 kilometers east of Eckersmühlen and 5 kilometers southwest of Allersberg .

description

It is a designated 47 hectare nature reserve with the cadastral number NSG500.056. It is a silting zone that was renatured again after the Rothsee was flooded in 1993 . The naturally occurring population changes in different humid habitats can be observed here. In the silting area, shallow water zones and smaller islands alternate. The resulting riparian zones are decoupled from the sometimes strong water level fluctuations of the reservoir and therefore rarely fall completely dry.

Flora and fauna

Großseggenriede together with reed beds and willow bushes form a protected habitat for numerous water-bound animals. The area forms a shelter and breeding space for birds such as the greylag goose , the great crested grebe and reed bunting . Other bird species rest here during bird migration .

Access

The Rothsee is fully accessible with a circumferential bike and footpath, which also runs right along the northern border of the protected area. It is blocked with a fence and partially natural with a tree root barrier. The habitats can be seen from the path, access to the protected area itself is not permitted. A viewing pavilion with information boards is located in the south near the area. A birdwatching visit is especially worthwhile in spring and autumn.

There are parking spaces, some of which are subject to a charge, at the Eckersmühlen lock, at the sailing center near Heuberg and on the dam between the main lock and the pre-lock near Birkach . With the public transport ( VGN ) the journey is z. B. possible via Allersberg and Birkach. From there it is about 15 minutes on foot along the riverside path.

The surroundings of the Rothsee offer numerous leisure activities such as sailing, surfing, swimming, cycling and hiking. There is a swimming beach and a restaurant at the sports boat harbor.
