The Rednitz is the 46 km long left or southern source river of the Regnitz in Franconia . Somewhat richer in water than the other source river Pegnitz and also richer in tributaries, it is hydrographically regarded as the upper reaches of the Regnitz, although the longest flow path in its system is more than 20 km shorter than that in the system of the Pegnitz.

Surname

In written sources, the river first appears in the 8th century under the Latin name Radantia . In the 11th century the name of the river is given as Ratenza .

geography

course

The river arises in Georgensgmünd in the district of Roth at 342  m above sea level. NHN through the union of Franconian and Swabian Rezat .

From there the Rednitz flows northwards via Roth , Büchenbach , Rednitzhembach , Penzendorf and Schwabach . Significant for the old cultural landscape are the numerous old mills, especially in the upper section up to Roth, often today only living spaces or small industrial companies.

For Nuremberg , apart from the statistical district 551 with the districts of Mühlhof and Lohhof , the Rednitz forms roughly the western boundary of the city area and touches the neighboring communities of Stein , Oberasbach and Zirndorf to the west .

In Fürth it flows west past the old town and shortly thereafter unites at an altitude of about 283  m above sea level. NHN with the Pegnitz , which comes east of the Fürth city center from the direction of the Nuremberg old town, to the Regnitz .

The 46.4 km long course of the Rednitz ends about 59 meters below its confluence from the two Rezats, it has a mean bed gradient of about 1.3 ‰.

Catchment area

The 2.118 km² catchment area of the Rednitz lies in the Middle Franconian Basin , it drains it via the Regnitz, the Main and then the Rhine to the North Sea .

nature and environment

Water quality

The water quality has improved over the past few decades. The water quality class 1976 was still between II-III (critically polluted) and III (heavily polluted), the 'Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gewässerschutz Obere Regnitz 2001 classified the pollution north of Roth in class II (moderately polluted) and south of it as critically polluted.

Rednitz Valley

Rednitz Valley between Katzwang and Wolkersdorf

The Rednitz Valley is one of the few valley areas in Franconia that has remained unchanged since the Middle Ages and consists largely of so-called floodplains , characterized by woody trees that accompany the banks , and partly by riparian forests . The valley areas have been tended for centuries by farmers in water cooperatives via a narrow system of canals and ditches. This artificial irrigation enables three grass cuts per year.

Rare birds, fish, reptiles and insects are native there. In autumn 2004, the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment designated the Rednitz Valley from the A 6 in the south to Stein in the European Union as a Natura 2000 FFH area that is particularly worthy of protection .

Economical meaning

To the north of Schwabach, numerous wooden water paddle wheels were in operation from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century , which were used to irrigate the adjacent fields (see also Regnitz ).

The water of the Rednitz feeds the cooling towers of Nuremberg large power station Franken I .

freetime and recreation

On a section from Rothenburger Straße in the direction of Fürth-Weikershof, a cycling and hiking trail has been laid out in recent years.

At the intersection of the river with the important regional road connection, the Fernabrücke, the Water Management Office had a small barrage, a gauge house and a measuring point for water quality built in 2004 .

This level has the side effect that the canoe slalom course of the canoe club SG 1883 under the railway bridge (shown in the picture) has become more attractive; it is now considered to be one of the most demanding routes for young Bavarian paddlers. At the Fürth Canoe Slalom, South German championships of all classes are held there.
