The Lauterach is a right tributary of the Vils in the Upper Palatinate .

It rises in Lauterhofen in the Franconian Alb from two sources (Lauter and Ziegelbrunnen). The Lauterach flows further through the Upper Palatinate Jura and flows into the Vils at Schmidmühlen .
In the municipal area of Kastl, Hohenburg and Schmidmühlen, the Lauterach valley runs along the northern border of the Hohenfels military training area , where it forms the natural border of the Hirschwald Nature Park .

In September 2019, fish died in Lauterach near Kastl . A fish farm was also affected.
