The Weisse Laber (also Weisse Laaber ) is a 45 km long left tributary of the Altmühl in Bavaria .

course

The Weiße Laber rises in the Aubrunnen south of the Voggenthal district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate . A few steps after this source, an about one kilometer long upper course flows from the right, which rises west of the place above the end of the market path towards Höhenberg on the European watershed . The White Laber flows from there through the Upper Palatinate Jura towards the south. In the upper reaches up to the confluence with the Breitenbrunner Laber, it is also known as the Lower Citizen Laber . At Dietfurt it splits up and flows into an old arm of the Altmühl .

Character and environment

Because of the surrounding barren landscape, the White Laber is often referred to as the Euphrates of Bavaria. On its way it takes in numerous smaller tributaries from karst springs . There are bog formations in the valley that began 3000 years ago. A number of endangered animal and plant species exist in the remains of these moors. Part of the valley near Deining is designated as a nature reserve valley of the Weißen Laaber near Deining and the Weiße Laaber near Waltersberg .

Bike and hiking trails along the idyllic lake invite you to explore.

The river was crossed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in October 1786 on the occasion of his Italian trip , and at that time he called it a "stinking filth".
