Peter Vichi "Pete" Domenici (born May 7, 1932 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ; † September 13, 2017 ibid) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the US Senate from 1973 to 2009 as a representative of the state of New Mexico.

Pete Domenici was born in Albuquerque as one of five children of Italian immigrants. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1950 . In 1954 he graduated from the University of New Mexico and 1958 from the University of Denver . He then worked as a lawyer in Albuquerque. In 1958 he married Nancy Burk. With her he had two sons and six daughters (Lisa, Peter, Nella, Claire, David, Nanette and the twins Paula and Helen).

Domenici began his political career in 1966 when he was elected city commissioner in Albuquerque. In 1967 he became chairman of the city commission in his hometown, which at that time corresponded to the office of mayor. In 1970 he lost the election for governor of New Mexico to Bruce King , but in 1972 he was elected senator of the state. In 1978 he won by a narrow majority against the later governor Toney Anaya ; the re-elections in 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002 he decided very clearly for himself. In the Senate, among other things, he sat on the influential Approval Committee .

In October 2007 Domenici announced that for health reasons he would not stand for another re-election to the Senate. He resigned from Congress in January 2009 ; he was succeeded by the Democrat Tom Udall .

On September 13, 2017, Domenico died at the age of 85 from complications after an abdominal operation.
