Political advancement and governor of New Mexico

Edwin Mechem was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1947 and 1948 he was a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives . On November 7, 1950, Mechem was elected governor of his state for the first time, where he prevailed with 53.7 percent of the vote against the Democrat John E. Miles . He served a total of four terms in office with interruptions. His first two terms between 1951 and 1955 were contiguous. His third term began - after defeating incumbent John F. Simms - on January 1, 1957 and ended two years later in January 1959. His fourth and final term began on January 1, 1961 and ended with his resignation on November 30, 1962 His terms in office were determined by the party-political conflict between a Democratic majority in the New Mexico Legislature and the Republican governor. The attempt of Mechems to implement Republican goals in New Mexico therefore met with resistance in Parliament. So his terms of office remained without any particular success. Finally he resigned from office in November 1962 to join the US Senate.
