Susana Martinez (born July 14, 1959 in El Paso , Texas ) is an American politician and lawyer of Mexican descent. In the 2010 election , Martinez was a Republican Party candidate and became the first woman to be elected governor of New Mexico . She held the office between 2011 and 2019.

Martinez was in 1997 District Attorney (District Attorney) of the Doña Ana County .

In the primary, she defeated Doug Turner, owner of a public relations firm, Janice Arnold-Jones, MP in the New Mexico House of Representatives , Pete Domenici Jr., son of former Senator Pete Domenici , and Allen Weh, former chairman of the Republican state . Sarah Palin supported her candidacy ; Martinez is close to the tea party movement . In the actual election of 2010, she and her candidate for the office of lieutenant governor , John Sanchez , prevailed with 53.4 percent of the vote against Democratic lieutenant governor Diane Denish and her running mate Brian Colon, who got 46.3 percent . She was held in her office in 2014. She could not run for the 2018 election and was therefore replaced by Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham on January 1, 2019 .

In 2008 she was named "Woman of the Year" by Heart Magazine . In 2010 she received the award "Public Prosecutor of the Year".

Positions

Susana Martinez is a staunch supporter of the Republican Party. She takes clear conservative positions on many sociopolitical issues, she strictly rejects same-sex marriages , but is in favor of allowing a woman to have an abortion after being raped. She is opposed to former US President Barack Obama's health care reform ( Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ). Martinez is against the medical marijuana program . But she says repealing the law is not a priority.
