John Munroe

John Munroe (* 1796 in Scotland , † April 26, 1861 in New Brunswick , New Jersey ) was an American officer and politician. He was the military governor of New Mexico from 1849 to 1851 .

Early years

John Munroe was born in Scotland and immigrated to America at a young age. On October 12, 1812, he enrolled at the US Military Academy at West Point . He stayed there until March 1814. This was followed by a long military career in the US Army. Over the years he rose from lieutenant to colonel .

Military career

In the final phase of the war against England (1812-1814) Munroe was stationed at Fort Independence as an artillery officer. In 1818 he became a lieutenant and in 1825 a captain . He was active in various military bases. In 1831 and 1832 he was involved in the Black Hawk War . During the nullification crisis of 1832 and 1833, he was stationed in the port of Charleston , South Carolina . In the following years he took part in some campaigns against the Indians. In 1838 he was appointed Brevet - Major transported.

During the Mexican-American War he rose to the rank of colonel. He took part in several battles. At times he served under General Zachary Taylor . After the war, he became military governor of New Mexico for two years. After stops in Virginia and South Carolina, he became commander of the troops in Florida in 1853 . He performed this task until 1856. After an unpaid vacation, he became commander of the US forces on the Platte River between 1858 and January 1861. His headquarters were Fort Randall in North Dakota . He died in April 1861.
