William A. Pile
William Anderson Pile (born February 11, 1829 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † July 7, 1889 in Monrovia , California ) was an American general and politician . He was governor of the New Mexico Territory from 1869 to 1871 .
Early years
William Pile attended local schools in his home country. He then studied theology and became a pastor in a Methodist church. During the civil war he was initially a chaplain in the Union's army . In the course of the war he served in several units and rose to Brevet Brigadier General by 1865 .
Political career
Pile was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1867 and 1869 he was a member of the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he represented the first constituency of the state of Missouri . After being in 1868 not confirmed in this office, he was selected by President Ulysses S. Grant to the United States Ambassador in Venezuela and Brazil appointed. However, this appointment was not confirmed. Therefore, he could not take office. Instead, he became territorial governor of New Mexico . He held this office between 1869 and 1871. He then became ambassador to Venezuela between 1871 and 1874 before retiring from politics. William Pile died in July 1889.
