James Hugh Relfe

James Hugh Relfe (born October 17, 1791 in Virginia , †  September 14, 1863 in Caledonia , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1847 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact place of birth of James Relfe is not known. Around 1816 he and his father came to Caledonia in what was then the Missouri Territory . He received a rather average school education. After a subsequent medical degree and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in this profession in Caledonia. He later became a member of the commission for the redistribution of the land structures that were still from the Spanish colonial era. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Relfe was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1835 to 1844 . He was also a participant in the Black Hawk War . In February 1841 he was appointed US Marshal for Missouri. In the congressional elections of 1842 Relfe was elected in the then newly created third constituency of his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1843. After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1847 . These had been shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War since 1845 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, James Relfe practiced again as a doctor in Caledonia, where he died on September 14, 1863.
