Clarence Andrew Cannon (born April 11, 1879 in Elsberry , Lincoln County , Missouri , †  May 12, 1964 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1964 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clarence Cannon attended La Grange Junior College in Hannibal until 1901 and then William Jewell College in Liberty until 1903 . Between 1904 and 1908 he was a history teacher at Stephens College in Columbia . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1908, he began to work in this profession in Troy . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1911 he was employed in the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives , Champ Clark . Between 1915 and 1920 he worked in the congress administration. In the years that followed, he wrote a number of papers on the internal workings of Congress .

In the 1922 congressional election , Cannon was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the ninth constituency of Missouri, where he succeeded the previously defeated Republican Theodore W. Hukriede on March 4, 1923 . After 20 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death in May 1964. Between 1941 and 1964 he was chairman of the grant committee several times . Cannon campaigned for agriculture, among other things. During his 41 years as a member of parliament, the New Deal legislation in the 1930s, the Second World War and, as a result, the Korean War , the civil rights movement and the beginning of the Vietnam War fell . The 20th , 21st , 22nd and 23rd amendments to the Constitution were also adopted.

Clarence Cannon was married to Ida Dawson Wigginton since 1906, with whom he had two daughters. He served as a congressman until his death and was planning to run again when he died on May 12, 1964. He was buried in his birthplace, Elsberry.
