Samuel Swinfin Burdett
Samuel Swinfin Burdett (born February 21, 1836 in Broughton Astley , Leicestershire , England , † September 24, 1914 there ) was an American politician of British origin. Between 1869 and 1873 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1848, at the age of twelve, Samuel Burdett came to the United States where he found work on a farm in Lorain County , Ohio . At the same time he attended the public schools in his new home. After a subsequent law degree at Oberlin College and his 1858 admission as a lawyer, he began in DeWitt ( Iowa ) to work in this profession. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army between 1861 and 1864 , where he achieved the rank of captain. In December 1865 Burdett moved to Osceola , where he practiced as a lawyer again. In 1868 and 1869 he was a district attorney in the Seventh District of Missouri. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . In 1868 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , on which General Ulysses S. Grant was nominated as a presidential candidate.
In the congressional election of 1868 , Burdett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded John Hubler Stover on March 4, 1869 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1873 . In 1870 the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. From 1871 Burdett was chairman of the crafts committee. In 1872 he was defeated by the Democrat Richard P. Bland .
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Burdett returned to Osceola as a lawyer. In 1874 he was appointed as successor to Willis Drummond Head ( Commissioner ) of the federal land registry ( Land Office appointed). He later worked as a lawyer in the federal capital Washington. In 1885 and 1886, Burdett served as Commander in Chief Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic's veterans organization . He spent his last years in Glencarlyn ( Virginia ). Samuel Burdett died in his birth room on September 24, 1914 while visiting his home village of Sutton-in-the-Elms, England. He was buried in the American National Cemetery in Arlington .
