Claude Ignatius Bakewell (born August 9, 1912 in St. Louis , Missouri , †  March 18, 1987 in University City , Missouri) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1953 he represented the state of Missouri twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Claude Bakewell attended St. Louis University High School and then studied until 1932 at Georgetown University in Washington . After a subsequent law degree at Saint Louis University and his admission to the bar in 1935, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1941 and 1945 he was a member of the St. Louis City Council. During the final stages of World War II , Bakewell served in the US Navy between 1944 and 1946 .

In the 1946 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eleventh constituency of Missouri, where he succeeded John B. Sullivan , whom he had defeated in the election, on January 3, 1947 . Since he lost to Sullivan in 1948, he was initially only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1949 . This was determined by the events of the immediate post-war period. Bakewell was a member of the judiciary committee .

After the death of John Sullivan, Bakewell was re-elected as his successor to Congress in the by-election that became necessary, where he ended the current legislative period between March 9, 1951 and January 3, 1953. In 1952 he was defeated by Morgan M. Moulder of the Democratic Party . Between 1958 and 1982, Claude Bakewell headed the St. Louis Postal Service. He died on March 18, 1987 in University City and was buried in St. Louis.
