Samuel Caruthers
Samuel Caruthers (born October 13, 1820 in Madison County , Missouri , † July 20, 1860 in Cape Girardeau , Missouri) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1859 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Samuel Caruthers studied at Cumberland University in Lebanon ( Tennessee ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Fredericktown in this profession. In 1844 he moved to Cape Girardeau, where he held several local offices. Politically, he was initially a member of the Whig Party .
In the congressional elections of 1852 Caruthers was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the then newly created seventh constituency of Missouri , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1853. After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1859 . These were determined by the events and discussions leading up to the civil war . In the 1850s, Caruthers' party disbanded. Therefore, he initially joined the short-lived Opposition Party, as whose candidate he was re-elected in 1854. In the course of the following legislative period he became a member of the Democrats , for which he successfully ran for Congress in 1856. He represented three different political parties in his three legislative terms as a congressman.
