George H. Christopher

George Henry Christopher (born December 9, 1888 in Butler , Missouri , †  January 23, 1959 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1959 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

George Christopher attended public schools in his home country and then Hill's Business College in Sedalia . He later lived on a farm in Calhoun County , Illinois, and then Craig County , Oklahoma . He then ran his own farm in Bates County , Missouri.

Politically, Christopher was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1948 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of Missouri, where he succeeded Marion Tinsley Bennett on January 3, 1949 . Since he was not confirmed in 1950, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1951 , which was shaped by the events of the Cold War . Christopher worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1951 and 1952 .

In the congressional elections of 1954 , Christopher was re-elected to Congress in the fourth district of Missouri, where he replaced Jeffrey Paul Hillelson on January 3, 1955 . After two re-elections, he could remain there until his death on January 23, 1959. This period was still dominated by the Cold War. Domestically, the civil rights movement was the dominant theme at the time.
