Butler has been the seat of Bates County in western Missouri , which was formed in 1841 by merging parts of two counties since 1856 . A quarter of the county's residents live in Butler. The city is named after William Orlando Butler .

The parish is located approximately 104 km south of Kansas City and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area . Butler Memorial Airport is to the north of the town, US Route 71 to the west and Missouri Route 52 to the south.

The Bates County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a landmark .
