career

Clay was born in St. Louis, but his family moved to Washington, DC after his father Bill Clay was elected to Congress. He attended the University of Maryland at College Park , where he studied political science. By the year of his graduation, 1983, he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, and then to the state Senate in 1991 .

When his father retired from politics in 2000 after 32 years in Congress , the son stood up for his successor and surprisingly prevailed against his democratic competitors in the primary. Clay opposed the Iraq war from the start. From its inception, he was a member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee , a committee of the House of Representatives, and was temporarily chair of the information policy subcommittee. He is also a member of the Financial Services Committee .

He was re-elected ten times, always with over 70 percent, in the main election in November 2000 he again won the seat in the House of Representatives and took up his mandate on January 3, 2001. In the 2018 primary election, he won 56.70% against Cory Bush (36.91%) and won the main election against Republican Robert Vroman with 80.10%. His current mandate expires on January 3, 2021.

In the 2020 primaries, he just lost 45.53% as incumbent against the progressive Black Lives Matter activist Cori Bush , who had the support of the local branch of the Democratic Socialists of America , with 48.60%. This ended the 52-year-old political Clay dynasty and the " squad " around the democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got a new member.
