Nathan Cole (born July 26, 1825 in St. Louis , Missouri , †  May 4, 1904 there ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nathan Cole attended the public schools in his home country and then studied temporarily at Shurtleff College in Alton ( Illinois ). He later worked in St. Louis in commerce. Cole also entered the banking industry and was a board member for 43 years and at times vice president of the local commercial bank. He was also a director of several insurance companies and other companies. In 1876 he became president of the local trading exchange.

Politically, Cole was a member of the Republican Party . From 1869 to 1871 he was the successor to James S. Thomas Mayor of St. Louis . In the congressional elections of 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded the Democrat Erastus Wells on March 4, 1877 . Since he lost to Wells in 1878, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Nathan Cole continued his previous activities. He died on March 4, 1904 in St. Louis, where he was also buried.
