William Dawson (politician, 1848)

William Dawson (born March 17, 1848 in New Madrid , Missouri , †  October 12, 1929 there ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1887 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Dawson attended the Christian Brothers' College in St. Louis until 1869 . From 1870 to 1872 he was police chief and tax collector in New Madrid County . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1878 and 1884 he was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives .

In the congressional elections of 1884 Dawson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded Lowndes Henry Davis on March 4, 1885 . Since he was not nominated again by his party in 1886, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1887 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Dawson worked as a real estate agent. Between 1915 and 1927 he was a clerk at the District Court in New Madrid County. He died on October 12, 1929 in New Madrid, where he was also buried.
