John Fletcher Darby

John Fletcher Darby (born December 10, 1803 in Person County , North Carolina , †  May 11, 1882 at Pendleton Station , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Darby attended his homeland public schools and came to the Missouri Territory with his father in 1818 , where he worked on a farm. In 1825 he moved to Frankfort , Kentucky . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in St. Louis . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . Between 1835 and 1841 he was mayor of St. Louis twice .

In 1838 Darby was elected to the Missouri Senate . In the congressional election of 1850 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded Democrat James B. Bowlin on March 4, 1851 . Until March 3, 1853 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . These were shaped by the discussions about slavery .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, John Fletcher Darby retired from politics. In the following years and decades he worked in the banking industry. He died on May 11, 1882 near what is now Pendleton in Warren County .
