John R. Kelso

John Russell Kelso (born March 23, 1831 in Columbus , Ohio , †  January 26, 1891 in Longmont , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Kelso received a good primary education and then studied at Pleasant Ridge College in Missouri until 1859 . During the civil war , Kelso served in various units of the Union Army . He achieved the rank of captain.

In the congressional elections of 1864 he was elected as an independent Republican in the fourth constituency of Missouri to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Sempronius H. Boyd on March 4, 1865 . Since he refused to run again in 1866, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1867 . During this time the civil war ended. The work of Congress has been overshadowed by the conflict between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson . In 1865 the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

Between 1867 and 1869 John Kelso directed the Kelso Academy in Springfield . In 1872 he moved to Modesto , California and in 1885 to Longmont, Colorado, where he bought a property. During this time, Kelso worked as an author and reciter. He died on January 26, 1891 on his Colorado estate.
