William H. Hatch

William Henry Hatch (born September 11, 1833 in Georgetown , Kentucky , †  December 23, 1896 in Hannibal , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1895 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Hatch attended Lexington public schools . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1854, he began to work in this profession. In the years 1858 and 1860 he also worked as a public prosecutor. During the Civil War , Hatch served in the Confederation Army . He was initially a staff officer with the rank of captain. After that he was a member of the military authority that negotiated the exchange of prisoners of war. After the war he continued his legal practice.

Politically, Hatch was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded John Montgomery Glover on March 4, 1879 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . Since 1883 he represented there as the successor to Martin L. Clardy the first district of his state. During his tenure as a congressman, Hatch served as chair of the Agriculture Committee on several occasions. In 1894 he was defeated by the Republican Charles Nelson Clark .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, William Hatch worked in agriculture. He died on December 23, 1896 near the town of Hannibal, where he was also buried.
