Thomas Estes Noell

Thomas Estes Noell (born April 3, 1839 in Perryville , Perry County , Missouri , †  October 3, 1867 in St. Louis , Missouri) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Noell was the son of Congressman John William Noell (1816–1863). He attended the public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1858, he began to work in Perryville in this profession. During the Civil War , he served between 1861 and 1865, first in the Missouri State Militia until 1862, and then in the Union Army , where he made it up to captain.

Politically, Noell was initially a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded John Guier Scott on March 4, 1865 . In the course of his first term in office, Noell changed his party affiliation and became a member of the Democrats . He was confirmed as their candidate in 1866. This allowed him to remain in the US House of Representatives until his death on October 3, 1867. During his time as a member of Congress, the civil war ended and the 13th Amendment was ratified . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been shaped by the disputes between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson .

Noell died unexpectedly on October 3, 1867 after a brief illness. At that point, at 28, he was the youngest Congressman to have passed away during his tenure. After a special election, his mandate fell to the Democrat James Robinson McCormick . Thomas Noell was buried in Perryville.
