James Nelson Burnes
James Nelson Burnes (born August 22, 1827 in Marion County , Indiana , † January 23, 1889 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1889 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1837, James Burnes moved with his parents to Platte County , Missouri, where he attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his 1853 admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In 1856 Burnes was a district attorney; from 1868 to 1872 he served as a judge at an appeals court. He also went into banking and the railroad business. He has since served as President of the Missouri Valley Railroad Co. and owner and president of St. Joseph Waterworks Co.
Politically, Burnes was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth constituency of Missouri, where he succeeded Lowndes Henry Davis , who moved to the 14th district, on March 4, 1883 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 23, 1889 . Burnes was also confirmed in the 1888 election. Due to his death, he could not take up his renewed mandate on March 4, 1889. Charles F. Booher ended his term of office until March 3, 1889 between February 19 and March 3, 1889.
