Gustavus Sessinghaus (born November 8, 1838 near Cologne , Prussia , †  November 16, 1887 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American politician of German origin. In March 1883 he represented the state of Missouri for one day in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gustavus Sessinghaus first attended schools in his German homeland and later emigrated to the United States, where he settled in St. Louis and worked in the milling business. During the civil war he was a member of a reserve unit in the Union Army . In addition to his work in the milling business, Sessinghaus was also politically active as a member of the Republican Party .

Between 1878 and 1880 he was a member of the St. Louis School Committee. In the congressional election of 1880 he was defeated in the third constituency of Missouri to the Democrat Richard Graham Frost . Sessinghaus appealed against the outcome of the election. The Congress did not decide in his favor until the penultimate day of the following legislative period, March 2, 1883. This meant that Sessinghaus could only exercise his mandate for one day until the official expiry of his term on March 3, 1883. Since he had failed in the elections of 1882 , he could no longer remain in Congress.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Sessinghaus continued his work as a miller. He died on November 16, 1887 in St. Louis, where he was also buried.
