Jo Ann Emerson (born September 16, 1950 in Bethesda , Maryland ) is an American politician . From 1996 to 2013 she represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jo Ann Hermann, her maiden name, attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware until 1972 . In 1975 she married Bill Emerson , later Congressman , with whom she has two daughters. After the death of her husband, who died while serving as a member of Parliament, she was initially elected as an independent candidate in the by-election for the eighth seat of Missouri to succeed him in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she was elected on November 5, 1996 took up her new mandate. After eight re-elections as a candidate for the Republican Party , she was able to exercise her mandate until she resigned on January 22, 2013. During this time, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the Iraq war took place .

Emerson most recently served on the Grants Committee and three of its subcommittees. She is counted to the moderate wing of her party and belonged within factions to the Republican Main Street Partnership . During her time in parliament she has often voted against the majority of her group. Most recently, she was Senior Vice President ( Dean ) from Missouri.

She resigned from her mandate in early 2013 to take on the role of President and CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association , an energy service provider association. Jason Smith , MP in the House of Representatives from Missouri, was nominated as her successor by the Republican Party . The by-election took place on June 4, 2013, with Smith being elected.
