Karen McCarthy (born March 18, 1947 in Haverhill , Essex County , Massachusetts , † October 5, 2010 in Overland Park , Kansas ) was an American politician in the Democratic Party and long-time member of the House of Representatives .

biography

After attending East High School in Shawnee Mission , she began studying at the University of Kansas in 1965 and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In addition, she completed a postgraduate course at the University of Missouri and acquired there a Master of Arts (MA) in 1976 and worked as a teacher for English operates.

In 1977 she began her political career by being elected to the Missouri House of Representatives , where she represented the interests of the Democratic Party until 1995. During this time she was President of the National Conference of State Legislatures in 1994 .

In addition to further studies at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University , which she graduated in 1982, she completed another postgraduate course in business administration at the University of Kansas, completing this course in 1986 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

In the 1994 congressional election she was elected to succeed Alan Wheat as a member of the US House of Representatives and was a member of the House of Representatives as the Democratic representative for the 5th Congressional District of Missouri from January 3, 1995 to January 3, 2005. In the 2004 elections, she decided not to run for the 109th US Congress . Successor as Congressman was the former Mayor of Kansas City , Emanuel Cleaver .

The fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar once named her alongside Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton as a possible candidate for the presidency .

Karen McCarthy died of complications from Alzheimer's disease , which she had suffered from since June 2009.
