Elijah Hise Norton

Elijah Hise Norton (born November 21, 1821 in Russellville , Logan County , Kentucky , †  August 6, 1914 in Platte City , Missouri ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elijah Norton attended his home public schools and Center College in Danville . After a subsequent law degree at Transylvania University in Lexington and his admission as a lawyer in 1845, he began to work in Platte City in this profession. In 1850 Norton became a district attorney; between 1852 and 1860 he was a district judge.

Politically, Norton was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1860 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded James Graig on March 4, 1861 . Since he was not confirmed in 1862, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1863 . This was shaped by the events of the civil war .

In 1875 Norton was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Missouri Constitution. From 1876 to 1879 he served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Missouri ; after that he practiced as a lawyer again. Elijah Norton died on August 6, 1914 in Platte City, where he was also buried.
