John Gaines Miller
John Gaines Miller (born November 29, 1812 in Danville , Kentucky , † May 11, 1856 in Marshall , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1856 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Miller attended public schools in his home country and Center College in Danville. After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1834. A year later he moved to Boonville , Missouri, where he began a political career as a member of the Whig Party . In 1840 he became a member of the Missouri House of Representatives .
In the 1850 congressional election , Miller was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded James S. Green on March 4, 1851 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 11, 1856 . Since 1853 he represented there as the successor of John S. Phelps the fifth district of his state. After the Whigs dissolved, Miller joined the short-lived Opposition Party , and was re-elected as its candidate in 1854. During his time as a member of Congress, the US House of Representatives discussed the problems in the run-up to the civil war . It was mainly about the question of slavery and the rights of the individual states vis-à-vis the Union. After a by-election, Miller's mandate fell to Thomas Peter Akers of the American Party .
