Lyne Shackelford Metcalfe (born April 21, 1822 in Madisonville , Kentucky , †  January 31, 1906 in Kirkwood , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lyne Metcalfe attended the common schools and then the Shurtleff College in Alton ( Illinois ) and the Illinois College in Jacksonville . Since 1844 he worked in Alton in trade. In this city he also began a political career: he became a member of the local council and eventually mayor. During the Civil War , Metcalfe served in the Union Army , where he made it to the rank of colonel. After the war he lived in St. Louis, Missouri, where he worked in the trade. He also sat on the city council in his new hometown.

In the congressional elections of 1876 Metcalfe was elected as the Republican Party candidate in the third constituency of Missouri against Richard Graham Frost in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William Henry Stone on March 4, 1877 . Frost appealed against the outcome of the election without success. Since Metcalfe was not confirmed in 1878, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Lyne Metcalfe withdrew from politics. He died on January 31, 1906 in Kirkwood and was buried in neighboring Alton.
