Benjamin Joseph Franklin (born March 1839 in Maysville , Kentucky , † May 18, 1898 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives and was also governor of the Arizona Territory .

Career

Franklin attended private schools. He then went from 1849 to 1851 at Bethany College in Bethany , Virginia (now West Virginia ). He taught at a school and studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1859 and then began practicing in Leavenworth , Kansas .

He decided in 1861 to embark on a political career by running for a seat in the Kansas Senate . He won the election, but could not take up his position due to the outbreak of the Civil War . He then entered the Confederate States Army in the rank of private . He was promoted to the rank of captain and served throughout the war. After the war, he moved to Columbia , Missouri, where he did agricultural work. In 1868 he moved to Kansas City , Missouri, where he resumed his practice as a lawyer. Franklin served as the Jackson County attorney from 1871 to 1875 .

He was elected a Democrat in the 44th and 45th US Congresses . He worked there from March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1879. During this time he was also the chairman of the Committee on Territories (45th US Congress). He initially applied for re-election, but then withdrew his candidacy. He then went to practice as a lawyer in Kansas City. In 1885 he was appointed US consul in Hankow , China . He returned to the United States in 1890 and settled in Phoenix, where he practiced as a lawyer. He was later appointed governor of the Arizona Territory and served in that position from April 18, 1896 to July 29, 1897. He died on May 18, 1898 in Phoenix and was then buried in Rosedale Cemetery .
