John Gosper

John Jay Gosper (* 8. April 1842 ; † 14. May 1913 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and businessman, the post of Secretary of State of Nebraska and the Secretary of Arizona Territory held. Furthermore, after John C. Frémont resigned his office as governor , acting governor of the Arizona Territory.

Life

Gosper was born near Mount Vernon , Ohio to Sarah (Tompkin) and Naphar Gosper . Between the ages of eleven and eighteen, he trained with a local farmer and left his employer prematurely because of bad treatment.

At age 25, Gosper married Waitie E. Polley Graham , a widow with a 12-year-old son.

When the civil war broke out, he volunteered for service in the Union Army . There he reached the rank of colonel . He also lost his left leg in a battle. After the war, he moved to Nebraska, where he was elected Secretary of State .

He was then appointed Secretary of the Territory in the Arizona Territory by US President Rutherford B. Hayes . Gosper arrived in Arizona on May 30, 1877. He worked under the governors Hoyt and Frémont.

The Gosper County , Nebraska is named after him.
