Gosper County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Elwood , named after Elwood Thomas , an early farmer in the area.

The county is located in southern Nebraska, about 25 miles south of Kansas , and has an area of 1,198 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Phelps County , Furnas County , Frontier County, and Dawson County .
history
Gosper County was formed in 1873. It was named after John J. Gosper , a secretary of state for Nebraska.
One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 11, 2018, the Gosper County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Gosper County had 2,143 people in 863 households and 655 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.79 percent white, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.26 percent of the population.
Of the 863 households, 29.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 69.1 percent were married couples living together, 3.9 percent were single mothers, 24.1 percent were non-families, 22.8 percent were single households, and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 20.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 102.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 101.4 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,827 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,702. Males had a median income of $ 28,836 versus $ 21,204 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,957. 4.8 percent of families and 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 11.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 5.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
