Thayer County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Hebron , named after the biblical city in Palestine.

The county is located in southeastern Nebraska, borders the state of Kansas to the south and has an area of 1,490 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jefferson County , Nuckolls County, and Fillmore County .
history
Thayer County was formed in 1872. It was named after the general and governor John Milton Thayer .
Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 12, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Thayer County had 6,055 people in 2,541 households and 1,689 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.70 percent white, 0.02 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.01 percent of the population.
Of the 2,541 households, 27.7 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.8 percent were married couples living together, 5.0 percent were single mothers, 33.5 percent were non-families, 31.5 percent were single households, and 18.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.90.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 4.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 24.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,740 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,346. Males had a median income of $ 26,964 versus $ 18,275 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,043. 7.6 percent of families and 10.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.8 percent were children or young people under the age of 18 and 11.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
