history

James E. Boyd

Boyd County was formed in 1891 from Indian land and parts of Holt County. It was named after James E. Boyd (1834-1906), a former governor of Nebraska (1891-1893).

Six buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Boyd County had 2,438 people in 1,014 households and 670 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.89 percent white, 0.00 percent African American, 0.57 percent Native American and 0.16 percent Asian; 0.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.08 percent of the population.

Of the 1,014 households, 29.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 3.7 percent were single mothers, 33.9 percent were non-families, 32.0 percent were single households and 19.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.98.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 24.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county was $ 26,075 , and the median income for a family was $ 32,000. Males had a median income of $ 20,859 versus $ 17,688 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,840. 12.9 percent of families and 15.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
