Wheeler County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Bartlett , named after Ezra Bartlett Mitchell , the city's founder.

The county is located in northeastern Nebraska and has an area of ​​1,491 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Antelope County , Boone County , Greeley County , Garfield County, and Holt Counties .

history

Wheeler County was formed in 1877. It was named after Major Daniel H. Wheeler .

As of the 2000 census , Wheeler County had 886 people in 352 households and 243 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.10 percent white, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.56 percent Asian and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.11 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.56 percent of the population.

Of the 352 households, 31.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.8 percent were married couples living together, 3.1 percent were single mothers, 30.7 percent were non-families, 29.0 percent were single households and 14.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.10 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 100.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,771 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,750. Males had a median income of $ 21,563 versus $ 17,083 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,355. 15.4 percent of families and 20.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
