Johnson County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Tecumseh , which was named after the Shawnee chief .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Nebraska, about 35 kilometers to the south from Kansas , about 25 miles to the east from Missouri , to the northeast about 45 kilometers from Iowa , and has an area of ​​976 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Otoe County , Nemaha County , Pawnee County , Gage County, and Lancaster County .

Significant niobium deposits have been discovered near Elk Creek in southeastern the county , the exploitation of which is expected to alleviate the United States' import dependence on niobium. The deposit is currently being developed.

history

Johnson County was formed in 1855. It was named after Vice President Richard M. Johnson .

Johnson County had a population of 4,488 people as of the 2000 census . 62 of these residents were housed in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,887 households and 1,254 families. The population density was five people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.54 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 2.67 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.96 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.29 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.87 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90.8 men.

The median income for a household in the 32,460 US $ , and the median income for a family was $ 41,000. Males had a median income of $ 26,282 and females $ 20,799.
