Hayes County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Hayes Center , named for its central location in the county.

The county is located almost in the extreme lower southwest corner of Nebraska, about 25 miles south of Kansas , about 50 km to the west from Colorado , and covers an area of 1,848 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Frontier County , Hitchcock County , Dundy County , Chase County , Perkins County, and Lincoln County .

Hayes County was formed in 1877. It was named after President Rutherford B. Hayes .

As of the 2000 census , Hayes County had 1,068 people in 430 households and 312 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.2 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.3 percent Asian and 1.8 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.5 percent of the population.
Of the 430 households, 28.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 67.0 percent were married couples living together, 2.6 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 26.5 percent were single households, and 15.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 102.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 26,667 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,125. Males had a median income of $ 19,211 versus $ 16,806 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,099. 14.6 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 26.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
