Harlan County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Alma , named after the daughter of NP Cook , an early settler in the area.

The county is located in southern Nebraska, bordering Kansas, and has an area of 1,487 square kilometers, of which 55 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Phelps County , Kearney County , Franklin County, and Furnas County .
history
Harlan County was formed in 1871. It was named after a nephew of US Senator James Harlan .
Four structures, including three bridges, in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Harlan County had 3,786 people in 1,597 households and 1,049 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.86 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.77 percent of the population.
Of the 1,597 households, 25.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.0 percent were married couples living together, 4.3 percent were single mothers, 34.3 percent were non-families, 30.8 percent were single households, and 16.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 23.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,679 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,875. Males had a median income of $ 27,580 versus $ 18,411 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,618. 7.0 percent of families and 10.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
