Richardson County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Falls City , named after the Nemaha River falls .

The county is located in the extreme southeast of Nebraska, borders Kansas to the south, Missouri to the east, and has an area of ​​1,440 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Nemaha County and Pawnee Counties .

William A. Richardson

Richardson County was formed in 1855. It was named after William Alexander Richardson , a governor of the former territory. On May 30, 1879, the Irving tornado hit Richarson County. This tornado reached wind speeds of up to 420  km / h , which means a classification F4 on the Fujita scale . It left a path of destruction that was 750 m wide and 160 km long. Eighteen people were killed and 60 injured.

One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Leary Site archaeological site . Eleven buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 12, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Richardson County had 9,531 people in 3,993 households and 2,567 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.65 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 2.32 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.48 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,993 households, 29.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.4 percent were single mothers, 35.7 percent were non-families, 32.2 percent were single households, and 17.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.95.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,884 , and the median  income for a family is $ 39,779. Males had a median income of $ 25,938 versus $ 18,775 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,460. 6.3 percent of families and 10.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 10.5 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 11.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
