The county is located in eastern Nebraska and borders Iowa , from which it is separated by the Missouri . Burt County covers an area of ​​1,287 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

F. Burt

Burt County was formed in 1854 as one of Nebraska's nine original counties. It was named after Francis Burt (1807-1854), the first governor of the Nebraska Territory (1854).

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018). This includes the Burt County Courthouse in Tekamah (No. 89002223).

As of the 2000 census , Burt County had 7,791 people in 3,155 households and 2,240 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.63 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 1.07 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.26 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 91.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,954 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,515. Males had a median income of $ 28,750 versus $ 20,663 for females.
