Polk County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Osceola . The city was named after Chief Osceola of the Seminole people and was home to three governors of Nebraska: Albinus Nance , John Hopwood Mickey and Ashton Shallenberger . In 1895 a fire destroyed all but two of the buildings.

The county is located in east-central Nebraska and has an area of ​​1,141 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Butler County , York County , Hamilton County , Merrick County, and Platte County .

history

Polk County was formed in 1856. It was named after President James K. Polk .

According to the 2000 census , Polk County had 5,639 people in 2,259 households and 1,570 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.92 percent white, 0.02 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.08 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,259 households, 29.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.9 percent were married couples living together, 4.1 percent were single mothers, 30.5 percent were non-families, 27.6 percent were single households, and 15.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,819 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,081. Males had a median income of $ 30,286 versus $ 19,595 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,934. 4.4 percent of families and 5.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. 7.2 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 4.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
