Keith County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Ogallala , named after the Oglala people .

The county is located in west-central Nebraska, bordering the extreme northeast corner of Colorado in the southwest and has an area of ​​2,874 square kilometers, of which 126 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Arthur County , McPherson County , Lincoln County , Perkins County , Deuel County, and Garden County .

Keith County was formed in 1873. It was named after Morrill C. Keith , the grandfather of Governor Keith Neville .

As of the 2000 census , Keith County had 8,875 people in 3,707 households and 2,535 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.75 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.71 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian and 1.49 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.80 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.23 percent of the population.

Of the 3,707 households, 30.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers, 31.6 percent were non-families, 27.9 percent were single households and 13.5 percent had people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 18.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,325 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,118. Males had a median income of $ 26,523 versus $ 19,024 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,421. 6.6 percent of families and 9.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
