Madison County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Madison .

The county is located in northeastern Nebraska, about 80 km to the north from South Dakota , about 120 km to the east from Iowa , and covers an area of 1,489 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pierce County , Stanton County , Platte County , Boone County, and Antelope County .

history

Madison County was formed in 1856. It was named after President James Madison .

According to the 2000 census , Madison County had 35,226 people in 13,436 households and 8,894 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.35 percent white, 0.94 percent African American, 1.19 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.03 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.64 percent of the population.

Of the 13,436 households, 33.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, 33.8 percent were non-families, 27.9 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.12.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 11.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 94.8 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 35,807 , and the median income for a family was $ 45,073. Males had a median income of $ 30,631 versus $ 21,343 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,804. 7.5 percent of families and 11.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 13.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
