The county is located in eastern Nebraska, about 50 miles from Iowa , and has an area of 1,084 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

S. Colfax

Colfax County was formed in 1869. It was named after Schuyler Colfax , the 17th Vice President of the United States (1869–1873).

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Colfax County had 10,441 people in 3,682 households and 2,592 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.73 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.14 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 15.94 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.73 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 26.17 percent of the population.

Of the 3,682 households, 35.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, 29.6 percent were non-families, 25.7 percent were single households, and 15.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.31 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. Statistically, there were 106.4 males for every 100 females. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 105.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,849 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,936. Males had a median income of $ 25,656 versus $ 20,485 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,148. 7.2 percent of families and 10.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 13.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
