The Clay County is a county in the US state of Nebraska . The county seat is Clay Center , named for its central location in the county.

The county is located in southeast Nebraska, about 25 miles south of Kansas , and covers an area of 1,485 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Clay County was formed in 1855 on former Indian land. It was named after Henry Clay (1777-1852), a US politician, member of the House of Representatives and the Senate and Secretary of State .
Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Clay County had 7,039 people in 2,756 households and 1,981 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.57 percent white, 0.17 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian and 1.24 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 3.48 percent of the population.
Of the 2,756 households, 32.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 63.7 percent were married couples living together, 5.5 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 25.7 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.03.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 18.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,259 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,541. Males had a median income of $ 28,321 versus $ 19,870 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,870. 8.5 percent of families and 10.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 13.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
