The county is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 2526 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Buffalo County was formed from former Indian land in 1855. It was named after the herds of buffalo that passed here at the time.

Buffalo County had a population of 42,259 people as of the 2000 census . 2,788 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 15,930 households and 10,227 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.18 percent white, 0.55 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.68 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups. 1.03 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.66 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 15,930 households, 32.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, 35.8 percent were non-families, 26.1 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 17.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,782 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,247. Males had a median income of $ 30,182 versus $ 21,977 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,510. 6.3 percent of families and 11.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 10.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
