Garfield County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Burwell .

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 1,480 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wheeler County , Valley County , Loup County, and Holt County .

history

Garfield County was formed in 1884. It was named after President James A. Garfield .

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 11, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Garfield County's population was 1,902. 57 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 813 households and 529 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.79 percent white, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.00 percent of the population.

Of the 813 households, 26.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 3.6 percent were single mothers, 34.9 percent were non-families, 32.7 percent were single households, and 20.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 4.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 20.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 24.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 85.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,407 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,762. Males had a median income of $ 24,563 versus $ 16,146 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,368. 9.7 percent of families and 12.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. 11.5 percent of these were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
