Burwell is the only registered city and the county seat of Garfield County in the US state of Nebraska .
history
Burwell was connected to the rail network in 1887 by the Burlington Railroad , which advanced north-west from Central City . The Burwell Women's Club started its own library in 1912. A fair that had been held in Burwell since 1921 later developed into “Nebraska's Big Rodeo”. Burwell was nicknamed the Outdoor Rodeo Capital of Nebraska in 1975 . The large cattle markets for which the city is known have been held since the 1930s. With the commissioning of the Calamus Dam in 1985, irrigation is ensured for 54,000 acres of land.

Burwell is located in Garfield County, Nebraska on State Highways 11 and 91 . It is located on the North Loup River , about 7 km south of the Calamus Reservoir .
