Central City is a city and the county seat of Merrick County in the US state of Nebraska .
history
Central City was originally founded under the name Lone Tree in 1866. As the Union Pacific Railroad expanded its rail network in Merrick County, Lone Tree quickly grew into a larger community. It was elected the county seat. Since the name of the city was not considered suitable to attract further settlers, the name was officially changed to Central City on July 1, 1875 . Since the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad reached the city in 1880 , the population continued to grow. Shops, hotels, two newspapers and several factories sprang up. A college was established in 1885 and is now part of the Nebraska Christian High School campus .
